2010 AL30
2010 AL30 is thought to be a 10-15m diameter Near Earth Object that passed within 130,000km (about 1/3 the distance to the moon) of the earth on 13th Jan 2010. I collected photometry and astrometry data on the object with students from Helston Community College using the 2m diameter Faulkes telescope North on Hawaii.
The astrometry was passed on to JPL via the BAA to be used for orbit refinement and pointing of the NASA Goldstone radio telescope in subsequent radar observations.
You can get an idea of the proximity to the earth from the orbit diagram below and the Youtube simulation of the asteroid's flypast.
